About the Item

A visually striking pair of vintage ceramic vases in the Jugendstil style, handcrafted in Germany circa 1960 by BB Hohenstein. These decorative vases feature a raised Chinese dragon motif in gold relief, winding around the cylindrical form, paired with a front-facing male figure holding a traditional fan—an unusual and evocative orientalist design in mid-century ceramics. The colour scheme is grounded in earthy browns and deep orange, punctuated with metallic gold detailing—hallmarks of expressive 1960s German pottery. Each vase measures 19 cm high with a diameter of 8 cm. Both are marked on the underside with the form number 4033/4 along with the BB Hohenstein insignia badge. Though unsigned, the dynamic relief work and stylized form echo early 20th-century models by Bernhard Bloch, and may represent a post-war reinterpretation of a Bloch-era design. In good vintage condition with expected minor wear to the base rims. An appealing example of mid-century studio ceramics that blends Jugendstil revival and Chinese decorative influence.
