About the Item
A large and decorative pair of Chinoiserie style vases. The scale is large enough to display these on the floor, or on a large table.
These are a graceful shape, with flared top, and a japanned surface featuring scenes of a scenic landscape, with large trees, maountains, water and islands. The underlying vases is light wood or papier-mâché, and decorated with black and gold lacquer.
There are intricately detailed borders at the tops and bases.
This decorative style (Chinoiserie) emerged in 17th century Europe, driven by a fascination with Asian cultures and countries, and the dramatic rise of trade from east to west. European artisans imitated Chinese designs, creating fanciful and often whimsical depictions of landscapes, people and mythical creatures.
