About the Item

PAIR OF NEO-GREC BRONZE URNS ON BLACK MARBLE WITH CANDLESTICK CREST Probably France, circa 1880 14" H x 5 1/4" W (base diameter 4 3/4") A finely cast pair of patinated and parcel-gilt bronze candlesticks in the form of urns, each is firmly weighted on a molded circular plinth of black Belgian marble. The bodies are decorated with low-relief neoclassical ornament including laurel scrolls, palmettes and central gilt-framed medallions depicting female masks. Twin handles sweep upward in volute form, each emerging from a finely modeled crowned male busts, the surface showing a deep brown patina with traces of gilt highlighting. The top is almost certainly designed to hold a candlestick, the ornamental finial petals acting as a functional drip catch and aesthetic termination to the candlesticks. They present beautifully as simple urns, but the utility and warmth added by using wax candles in them is hard to resist. Condition: Excellent overall condition with light wear to gilding and rubbing/translucency to the patinated surface. Minor surface marks consistent with age and a few tiny chips around the base. Ready to place. ref. 509EYD30P About silla antiques art Established in 2009, we have available in our 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery an ever-changing selection of carefully curated and catalogued furniture, decorative arts, paintings, sculpture and estate jewelry. Pair of French 19th Century Neoclassical Bronze and Red Marble Lamps
Located in Shippensburg, PA
FINE PAIR OF NEOCLASSICAL ORMOLU-MOUNTED ROUGE MARBLE TABLE LAMPS France, probably Paris, circa third quarter of the 19th century Item # 404LBP26Q A magnificent pair of Neoclassical vases converted into lamps, they are designed loosely after the influential vases of Antiquity known as the Medici and Borhese Vases. Those Kraters were executed in marble and have been widely considered the finest and most well-conceived vases of Antiquity. They have been frequently copied and have been the inspiration for many decorative arts, including the present pair. The original vases feature bas-relief scenes in the Medici vase of a seated Iphigenia beneath a statue of Diana surrounded by Achilles, Ulysses and Agamemnon and in the Borghese vase a scene of drunk Silenius, Dionysus wearing his animal skin garment and Ariadne all together accompanied by a procession of revellers. The present example departs from antiquity, focusing only on the Bacchic revellers and have repeated this motif across the field of the vase. They carry in their outstretched arms wreathes and long drapes of their garments, several carrying in hand the Thrysus. The chorus of figures is loosely reminiscent to the Borghese Dancers, also known as the Dancing Hours, executed in bas relief in marble...
