About the Item

This pair of vases is made of exceptionally fine Porcelaine de Paris from the 18th century. The bronze mounts are covered in gold, and were 19th century additions. The porcelain itself is a phenomenal blue color with gold designs on it that looks magnificent. The vases each have a set of four portraits on them as well: two horizontal scenes on the front and back, with two vertical portraits above them on the front and back as well. The paintings on the front of each have people in them, whereas the ones on the back depict country scenes and buildings. The inscription under the lid of the vase reads "Offert par Le Duc de Richelieu a la Princess de Lomballe." The Duke of Richelieu who gave these vases was most likely Louis François Armand de Vignerot de Plessis, the 3rd Duke of Richelieu and marshal of France. The vases were likely a wedding gift from the Duke. However, it is possible that they were given by Louis Antoine Sophie de Vignerot de Plessis, the 4th Duke of Richelieu, as a gift to the princess upon his rise to power in 1788. The Princess de Lomballe, to whom the vases were given, is none other than Maria Theresa Luisa, also named Marie Thérèse. She married the heir to the greatest fortune in France, who died a year later, leaving her independently wealthy. She was a prominent figure in court, becoming the close confidant of Marie Antoinette, who appointed her to the highest rank possible for a lady-in-waiting, the Superintendent of the Queen's Household. Her salon was an oft-used meeting place for Marie Antoinette and the National Constituent Assembly in the years prior to the Revolution. Marie Thérèse even went to Britain in 1791 to appeal for help for the French royals. She feared death upon her return, going so far as to write her own will before departing, but refused to abandon her close friend Marie Antoinette. Alas, her fears came to fruition, when she was thrown to a mob and savagely murdered after she refused to denounce the King, Queen, and monarchy at a hastily assembled tribunal on September 3, 1792.
