About the Item

This is a beautiful pair of small ewers made by Coalport in about 1825. Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th century, coming out with many innovative designs. The pottery emerged around the year 1800 in Shropshire, right on the edge of Staffordshire and near other great makers such as Spode, Minton, Davenport and many others. They went on to become a major potter in the 19th century and brought out many iconic designs. The vases have a simple shape with a diapered rim and a handle in the shape of a snake. The most stunning feature about them is the paintings: there are beautiful hand painted flowers and a fruits on a dark brown/green ground, all superbly executed. I have not been able to find any documentation about this set so I don't know who painted it, but it was done by one of the better painters in the Coalport factory. Condition report: The ewers are in excellent antique condition. Except for an extremely Fine hairline in the belly of one of the ewers (it goes straight through the peach, please see picture), there is no damage and no repairs. The gilt is a little bit rubbed. The flowers are all in fantastic condition. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. A beautiful pair of 19th century Louis XVI style French Sèvres style Porcelain and ormolu-mounted Ewers with dragon handles, birds and flowers. The porcelain is mounted on the finest quality of hand-chiseled and chased Doré bronze mounts. The top of the spouts are decorated with beautiful vine-like patterns. The handles are exquisitely cast with a flowing design with acanthus leaves resting on each. Two Doré bronze dragons can be found climbing towards the top of each ewer with wings and long tails. This is an extremely rare set of lidded sauce tureens made by Coalport in circa 1820. The tureens are decorated in the "Marquess of Anglesey" pattern.
