About the Item

Pair Royal Blue Sevres Porcelain Bronze Mounted covered Vases hand painted w/ Watteau scene and decorated with Raised Enamels and Gold, signed by the artist. The covered urns are conceived as a matched pair, each presenting a tall ovoid porcelain body rising from a circular pedestal stem and set onto a square gilt bronze base. Both are finished in a deep bleu de roi ground, providing a saturated field for the applied decoration. Domed covers sit above the bodies and are topped with gilt bronze acorn finials. Opposing scroll handles extend from the shoulders, cast in gilt bronze with leaf-form terminals and secured at both the upper and lower attachment points. Each urn is centered with a large oval reserve painted with Watteau lover scenes, enclosed within dense gilt scrollwork and foliate cartouches. One reserve depicts a seated couple in court dress within a garden setting, while the companion shows a related pastoral composition with a couple positioned beside drapery and floral elements. Additional gilded ornament appears at the neck, lower body, and pedestal, arranged in balanced bands and scroll patterns, and the painted scenes are signed by the artist. The porcelain surfaces show even glaze coverage across the bleu de roi ground, with clean separation between the painted reserves and surrounding gilding. Gilt decoration is built up in layered passages, incorporating scroll borders, lattice panels, and stylized foliage placed above and below the figural scenes. The covers repeat the decorative language of the bodies, with gilt borders and scrollwork aligned vertically to the main ornament. Gilt bronze collars line the interior rims, allowing the covers to seat securely. The bases are formed in gilt bronze with stepped profiles and four shaped feet, providing stable support beneath the porcelain stems. Painted Sèvres factory marks appear on the undersides of both urns in underglaze blue, confirming production at the Sèvres porcelain works. The survival of matching covers and original gilt bronze mounts supports the coherence of the pair.
