About the Item
This unique, fabulous engraved glass vase celebrating agricultural laborers who are sowing and harvesting wheat in the Czech Republic, illustrates the fact that Bohemia was one of the world's three major centers for fine glass engraving in the 1930s, along with Sweden (exemplified by Orrefors) and America (led by Steuben). The vase, the color of very pale champagne, depicts a man sowing seed, and two women who are harvesting the wheat, all in a stylized Art Deco manner. The artist was Antonín Lejsek, whose best work is rare; one example of his engraved glass can be seen at the Detesk Museum northeast of Prague. The vase is signed by the artist, and is dated 1938.
