About the Item

A rare, early example of Tamegroute pottery dating to the 18th century. Sourced from the Draa Valley in Southern Morocco, this vessel represents the region's oldest continuous ceramic tradition. The piece features the characteristic Tamegroute green glaze, achieved through an ancestral alchemy of local minerals, copper, and barley flour. Over the last two centuries, this organic mixture has developed a mesmerizing, deep patina that modern reproductions cannot replicate. The surface shows the oxidation and iridescence that only come with significant age. Originally designed as a utilitarian vessel for storing olive oil, the jug features a robust pouring handle and a wide, rimmed spout. Its medium size and grounded shape were engineered for stability and daily use in a traditional home. The jug is noticeably lighter in weight than 20th-century examples. This lightness speaks to the superior craftsmanship of the 18th-century era, where master potters threw vessels with finer, thinner walls to ensure ergonomic ease for the user. The surface of the jug’s belly bears distinct clay marks or "scars." These are not defects but are the signature of the traditional Tamegroute firing process. To maximize space in the kiln, items are tumble-stacked and separated by small clay stilts. When these stilts are broken off after firing, they leave these characteristic contact marks—a stamp of authenticity verifying the piece's handmade origins. Origin: Morocco (Tamegroute / Draa Valley) Date: 18th Century Material: Glazed Earthenware (Copper Barley Glaze) Type: Oil Jug / Pitcher Condition: Antique condition with historic patina and firing scars. Please note a small, historic chip to the base rim, which does not affect the piece's stability or aesthetic integrity. Curated by Mādda. Visit our seller page for more unique pieces.
