About the Item

Rare Paul Fouillen Quimper faience vase is hand painted with abstract decor of wide bands on the base and on the rim and abstract patterns in the central area of the vase. Cohesive yellow, olive, burnt orange, and chocolate brown palette of the patterns is accented with black outlines, preventing the complex patterns from blending with wide, intense orange and brown bands on the rim and on the base. Inner surfaces are glazed in monochromatic cream-colored glaze and decorated with continuation of the band from the rim, done in chocolate brown. The artistic quality of the painting, the sculptural essence of the mold, and the execution of the firing create an exceptional, timeless piece. The vase is signed with Paul Fouillen Quimper mark, that was in use from 1930 to early 1950s, and the decorator's initials. The first pieces made by Paul Fouillen after he left the HB factory were fired at the Henriot factory and bear his mark as well as that of Henriot. This vase does not have the second, Henriot mark, indicating that it was made at Paul Fouillen's factory. After World War I the Quimper factories added the word "France" on their marks, but only on pieces that were made for export. This vase does not have it, which means that the piece was created for domestic market. Pieces were marked "Fait Main" or "Décor Entièrement à la Main" to indicate they were decorated by hand. Based on overall mark analysis, we think that the vase was made from mid- to late 1930s to early 1950 for domestic market.

I.C.S. Art Deco Majolica Vase, Italy 1927-1940
By Industria Ceramica Salernitana
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Rare vintage ceramic vase features streamlined cylinder form with slightly flared out rim and graphic decor in off white, teal, black, and yellow palette. The main motif of abstract flowers on a branch, descending from a triangular structure, hand painted in monochromatic black glaze, is juxtaposed with the ombre off white and teal background and an abstracted flock of birds in shades of yellow. The sophisticated Art Deco style flowering branch, with contrasting, clearly defined, angular outline, is softened with rounded, Folk Art or Naive Art style, almost cloud-like bird motifs, asymmetrically placed on one side of the branch. The decor repeats on front and back sides of the vase with slight variations in colors and placements that are consistent with hand-painted nature of the piece. The vase retains obvious hand-formed concentric ridges throughout the whole body that add textural element to the piece and allow for slight pooling of the glazes. The bottom is concave and glazed in off-white, with the unglazed foot, showing pinkish beige clay; it is not a glaze defect, as it was left unglazed intentionally when the vase was placed in the kiln for firing. The vase is signed on the bottom with "Italy I.C.S" and Industria Ceramica Salernitana company's fish mark. It is in good vintage condition with age-appropriate small losses on glaze of the rim and bottom that do not detract from the quality and artistic expression of the vase and can be repaired professionally; please see pictures. I.C.S. was founded in 1927 by Berlin-born Moses Malamerson in Vietri Sul Mar on Amalfi coast in Italy. I.C.S quickly gained recognition by participating in multiple major European and American expositions and art competitions available, attracting many artists that were looking to escape the economic depression and political upheaval of 1930s. I.C.S. can claim the honor of having employed all the famous artists of the German (Tedesco) Period, including Studemann, Irene Kowalski, Hannasch, Richard Dolker...

Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Vase with Relief Decor, Italy Mid Century
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...
