Royal Worcester Reticulated, Double-Walled Goblet

About the Item

This exquisite goblet, probably by George Owen (also known as the greatest of all reticulators) is designed with an entirely pierced body and stem in a pale-blue honeycomb pattern dotted with gold between borders of zig-zagging turquoise and white enamel jewelling and foliage gold on a pale pink ground. The main body has both gold and iron red shield-shaped medallions, two large gilded panels with scene of nature (a pair of birds on a tree; a pair of toads and a moth in the grass) and four smaller gilded panels of a two storks, moth and dragonfly. The stem has a white enamelled ground framed by gilded bands and white enamel jewelling around the middle. The band around the middle of the foot is also in white enamel and has turquoise and red jewelling in the shape of a flower and star. The artist has spared no expense by even gilding the interior rim of the goblet with an intricate design. Even more extraordinary is that Owen did this by hand on his porcelain with no lathe no drill and entirely by eye. That is why each of his double walled vases is so fantastic. The straight-through cut is easy as with his plates as you can cut and tidy up from both sides. With the double wall as per this goblet, the cut from the leather-hard clay can only be done from one side and the cut-out section has to be caught for if it drops down between the two walls you cannot get it out. Marked in both the Royal Worcester Puce and Green mark, presumably because the original green mark was showing wear and was then re-stamped in puce. Based on the puce mark with a letter N, the object was produced in 1878 and bears the gilder's initials (NW). A truly rare object that has miraculously survived almost 150 years! A collector's dream!
