About the Item

Decorative vase in the style of the Scandinavian arts and crafts movement, the vase has many similarities to pieces by danish architect and artist Thorvald Bindesbøll. The vase is made by a highly skilled artist and has great details such as the handles and the structure in the glaze. Thorvald Bindesbøll (21 July 1846 in Copenhagen – 27 August 1908 in Frederiksberg) was a Danish architect and designer. Bindesbøll was the son of architect Gottlieb Bindesbøll and brother of Johanne Bindesbøll. He remained unmarried. Bindesbøll entered the Kulturkanonen for his life's work. These include his glazed jars, label for Carlsberg Pilsner (HOF), furniture and the Fiskepakhusene in Skagen. Both as an architect and craftsman, he managed to free himself completely from contemporary historicism and was ahead of his time with his deeply personal style. Because he remained marginalized as an architect, Bindesbøll increasingly turned to the arts and crafts, where he has made his most significant effort and truly found his own style. Even as a child he drew embroidery drafts for his sister Johanne. In his diverse embroidery designs from the 1860s and 1870s, Bindesbøll shows that he had a knowledge of classical ancient ornamentation and a certainty in the composition of its various elements that was unique. In addition, especially in the 1880s, there was extensive knowledge of the textile ornamentation of the oriental high cultures, especially those of India and Japan. This strict schooling in bound tasks gave him a familiarity and a security in all that concerned decoration. In 1883 he entered the field of ceramics, encouraged by his friend and architect Andreas Clemmensen, who had become acquainted with the sgrafitto technique in Italy and wanted to use it on tiles on house facades. Ceramics freed him, as it forced him to work quickly, and it was through this material that he arrived at his own, completely independent, but tradition-based ornamentation. Bindesbøll began by decorating the clay dishes of his artist friends; but soon he learned to fill an entire disc with a fixed but vivid abstract decoration. Working with the large jars helped to simplify and vary his style at once. The forms were strong and traditional, so that the turners could easily learn them by heart, accustomed as they were to the monotonous turning of jam jars. He worked with Johan Wallmann in Utterslev 1883-90 and with G. Eifrig in Valby 1891-1904. Between these two periods, in the summers of 1890 and 1891, he worked with faience at Kähler in Næstved, and around 1905 he made a number of models for pottery for P. Ipsen's widow. The period with Wallmann was particularly experimental in terms of colour. During Vestervold's bowing, together with August Jerndorff, he had collected 2 boxes of potsherds and broken pieces of faience, which continued to inspire him. The period with G. Eifrig meant a simplification in terms of color to black-white-yellow or full monochrome.
