About the Item

A visually arresting set of four handblown clear crystal thorn vases, produced in Czechoslovakia circa 1890, during the late Victorian period. Each vase is individually formed, featuring a tall cylindrical body rising from an irregular, organically splayed base, with applied clear glass thorns spiralling around the surface in a dynamic, twisting rhythm. The thorn decoration is expressive and deliberately uneven, clearly applied and manipulated by hand while the glass remained malleable. Subtle variations in form, thickness, and thorn placement occur across the set, underscoring their artisanal manufacture and lending each vase its own distinct character. The clear crystal is of excellent quality, with fine clarity that captures and refracts light across the layered textures and sculptural surfaces. Stylistically, these vases relate closely to the celebrated Victorian thorn vases produced by John Walsh Walsh in England during the same period. However, the slightly more exaggerated modelling, combined with their Bohemian provenance, strongly suggests Czech production—likely from one of the highly skilled glasshouses exporting decorative wares to the British market at the end of the 19th century. Each vase measures approximately 6.1 in (15.5 cm) in height and 2.75 in (7 cm) in diameter. Condition is good overall for their age. As expected with thorn glass of this type, several applied thorns show minor chips or softening, which are discreet and largely absorbed into the lively, textured surface. These imperfections do not detract from their visual impact and are consistent with authentic period examples. Highly versatile, the set works beautifully as individual bud vases, grouped sculptural objects, or as an unusual and evocative addition to a curated Victorian or Bohemian glass collection.

Victorian Green Glass Thorn Vase with Sterling Silver Rim, Czech, circa 1890s
By Kralik Glassworks, John Walsh Walsh
Located in Glasgow, GB
A late Victorian thorn vase in green art glass, likely produced in Czechoslovakia circa 1890s, attributed to the Kralik glassworks. The piece features a rounded, organic base that narrows into a slender neck, with the entire form encased in applied thorn-like protrusions—each individually manipulated by hand to create a tactile, botanical surface. The rim is fitted with a hallmarked sterling silver collar, added in England upon import—typical of the period, when Bohemian glass was embellished for the British market. The marks are visible and legible, offering provenance and adding to its historical appeal. This vase evokes stylistic parallels with the thorn glass...
