About the Item

A rare and striking set of six sculptural glass vases from the Hyrrä series, designed by the legendary Kaj Franck in 1965 for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland. These pieces exemplify Franck’s masterful balance between geometric precision and playful form. The name Hyrrä, meaning “spinning top” in Finnish, reflects the dynamic, totem-like silhouette of the vases — at once bold and balanced. Blown in rich cobalt blue glass with a hint of violet hue, each vase is a statement of mid-century modern glass artistry. The architectural shape, featuring a thick base and a cylindrical top, creates a strong yet elegant visual rhythm when displayed as a group. All six are individually signed and dated on the base, confirming their authenticity and collectible value. About the Hyrrä series: First introduced in 1965, the Hyrrä series is one of Franck’s more sculptural and experimental glass designs, produced in small quantities by the Nuutajärvi glassworks. Unlike his more utilitarian tableware, Hyrrä pieces are often seen as art glass — pushing the boundary between functional object and sculptural form. About Kaj Franck: Kaj Franck (1911–1989) was a key figure in Finnish design and a leading proponent of modernist ideals. As artistic director of both Arabia ceramics and Nuutajärvi glassworks, Franck shaped postwar Scandinavian design with his commitment to purity of form, democratic accessibility, and sustainability. His works are held in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Victoria Albert Museum, and Designmuseum Helsinki, among many others. This complete and signed set of Hyrrä vases offers a rare opportunity to acquire a significant piece of Nordic design history.
