About the Item

A rare trio from the ‘Mangania’ series, designed by Lillemor Mannerheim and produced by Gefle for Upsala-Ekeby in 1955. Each piece is made of finely crafted stoneware with Mannerheim’s signature satin matte black glaze, a finish that became her hallmark. Her use of the deep black glaze, developed during her Gefle years, became her artistic signature and remains a defining feature of postwar Scandinavian ceramic design. The set includes three distinct pieces: a tall vase with biomorphic cut-out handles (32 cm), the exceptionally rare small “whale vase” (10 cm), and a softly asymmetric bowl (height 8.5 cm, length 21 cm, width 16 cm). Together, they represent the elegant fusion of Nordic modernism and organic form that defined Mannerheim’s work in the 1950s. Both the vase and bowl bear the Gefle factory stamp on the base. The whale vase is signed by hand. • Designed and produced in 1955 • Manufacturer: Gefle / Upsala-Ekeby • Designer: Lillemor Mannerheim • Stoneware with satin black glaze • Made in Sweden • All pieces are in excellent vintage condition with light wear consistent with age. Tall vase has a few light surface marks. About the Designer: Lillemor Mannerheim (1927-1994) studied at The Högre Konstindustriella School in Stockholm (1945-49) and at Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris (1950-52). She designed for Gefle Porslinsfabrik, Rörstrand, and later Arabia Finland, gaining recognition for her refined modernist sensibility and mastery of ceramic glazes.
