About the Item

French Art Deco Ceramic Vase by Simone Larrieu, Signed “LSIM,” France, 1920s. This charming French Art Deco ceramic vase was created in the 1920s by Simone Larrieu, one of the key artistic figures of the celebrated Larrieu ceramics workshop in Maubourguet. The piece features a harmonious rounded form, characteristic of early Art Deco design, and is signed “LSIM” (Larrieu SIMone) on the underside. Compact and sculptural, it embodies the refined craftsmanship and distinctive decorative vocabulary of the Larrieu family atelier. Dimensions: • Height: 5.9" (15 cm) • Diameter: 5" (13 cm) A collectible work ideal for lovers of French Art Deco ceramics, handcrafted studio pottery, and 1920s decorative arts. About Simone Larrieu and the Larrieu Ceramics Workshop The Larrieu workshop was founded by Octave Larrieu, a sculptor best known for monumental works such as the Maubourguet War Memorial. Around 1915, he began collaborating with his daughter Simone Larrieu, a talented painter, pastellist, and ceramic decorator associated with the artists’ group La Palette. Together, they produced a remarkable body of stoneware and earthenware pieces distinguished by painted or relief decorations based on Simone’s original designs. Their work is deeply rooted in the Art Deco aesthetic, with stylized motifs, engraved reliefs, and floral compositions. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, the workshop also explored African-inspired themes, reaching a creative peak around the 1931 Colonial Exhibition. Their ceramics included depictions of animals, vegetation, and exotic figures, while Simone frequently adorned vases and pitchers with her signature large flowers and expressive birds. Some pieces were also decorated by Charlotte Pommier, a model and collaborator of Octave Larrieu. In addition to vases, the father-daughter duo produced lamp bases, dinnerware, table centerpieces, and more. Though Simone spent several years in Paris after her marriage in 1936, she returned in 1939 and continued creating more everyday ceramic objects while devoting increasing time to painting and watercolor. The output of the Larrieu workshop was limited, highly distinctive, and widely admired, with distribution in Tarbes, Lourdes, the Basque Country, Asia, and Vietnam. Today, works by Octave and Simone Larrieu are highly sought after for their artistic quality, rarity, and historical importance within French Art Deco design.
