About the Item

This early 19th-century Wedgwood black basalt vase is a rare find...beautifully proportioned and irresistibly versatile. Its rich, matte finish complements any interior style, allowing it to anchor a room with quiet sophistication. A timeless piece like this doesn’t just decorate a space—it elevates it. Black Basalt was created by Josiah Wedgwood in 1768. Wedgwood sought to recreate the dense, velvety luster of volcanic basalt, and he achieved it by enriching his clay with manganese mixed into the iron that local potters had long drawn from the region’s coal mines for their Egyptian black ceramics. When this iron-oxide-heavy mud was worked into warm, reddish clay bodies, the mixture transformed in the kiln: the surface darkened to a saturated, shadowy black, its matte finish smooth as cooled lava and strikingly uniform across every contour of the piece.
