About the Item
Small ceramic vase decorated with metallic crystallizations by the artist Serafino Ferraro (1939-2017) from the city of Vallauris in France.
Vallauris ceramics encompass the production of workshops and factories in the Vallauris region (France). At the end of the 19th century, the arrival of the railroads enabled production to expand, and the town's small workshops were transformed into full-fledged factories. Then, in the 20th century, culinary pottery began to decline (replaced by metal vessels), giving way to artistic ceramics. But it was in the late 1940s, with the arrival of Picasso in Vallauris, that the town's image as a center of traditional pottery took hold. In the 1950s, the greatest artists and architects converged on Vallauris.

Very large coloquinte vase from the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres. Hard porcelain with gold decoration of water lily leaves and butterflies on a shaded midnight-blue ground. Neck and heel highlighted with a gilded listel border. Green triangular stamp dated 1902.
The coloquinte vase is a reference to its original shape, inspired by the vegetables of the cucurbit family, which are not edible but often used as decorative gourds.

Located in Paris, FR
Bulb-bottomed vase with long neck decorated with multicolored enamel and gold. It is embellished with arabesques, flowers and latticework patterns in orientalist taste on a marbled Bordeaux background. Remnants of a mark underneath.
The fascination with the orient and its exotic decoration dominated the 18th-19th centuries. It was China that started the enthusiasm for the costumes and artistic shapes that came from faraway lands. However, as a result of conquests and colonial Expansion, this fascination saw the displacement of its origins. During the 18th century, Chinese and Turkish styles invaded the salons and gardens of royalty as well as affluent esthetes who prided themselves on their taste for The Orient. From then on, baths were Turkish, furniture was lacquered, Persian tapestries...
