About the Item

Heavy "Stromberg Blue" Swedish Modern art glass vase by Gerda Stromberg for Strombergshyttan Glassworks in Sweden c. 1960. This heavy ice blue/silver hued crystal was widely known as a signature color by Strombergshyattn.  Etched underneath "Stromberg B316."  A lovely piece from Mid-Century Sweden. Lindfors Glassworks was founded in 1876 and changed its name to Strombergshyttan in 1933, when Edward Stromberg, former head of Orrefors, took over the the company. He and his son, Eric, created a process to make glass with a bluish-silver color, which became the dominant characteristic of Strombergshyttan glass. The Stromberg family sold the company to Orrefors in 1976 and it was closed in 1979. Gerda Strömberg (1878–1960) was a Swedish glass designer who worked for several important Swedish glassworks during the first half of the 1900s. She worked, among others, for Orrefors, Eda Glassworks, and Strömbergshyttan, where she worked from the 1930s until her retirement. Strömberg’s designs are celebrated for their elegant simplicity and clarity, characteristics that have come to define fine Swedish glassware.
