About the Item

An original Swedish Art Deco smoked glass vase designed in 1923 by Edward Hald for the Sandvik branch of Orrefors Glassworks, Sweden. This early and significant work reflects Hald’s pivotal role in shaping modern Scandinavian glass during the 1920s, combining sculptural clarity with technical refinement at a moment of transition from late Jugendstil to Art Deco modernism. The vase features a sculptural, vertically undulating profile, swelling gently at the centre and tapering to a narrow, weighted base. The form is characteristic of Hald’s early experimentation with rhythm and proportion, bridging late Jugendstil influences and emerging Art Deco sensibilities. Executed in smoked grey glass, the surface displays excellent clarity and depth, with subtle tonal variation under light. The piece was likely mould-blown and finished by hand, as evidenced by the ground and polished pontil visible beneath. This model is documented in the 1923 Orrefors–Sandvik catalogue, and a corresponding example is held in the British Museum, underscoring its institutional and historical significance. Dimensions: Height: approx. 9.8 in (25 cm) Diameter: approx. 5.5 in (14 cm) Condition: Very good vintage condition. No chips or cracks observed. Light surface wear consistent with age; the glass retains a strong lustre. A rare and well-preserved example of early Swedish Art Deco glass, representing Edward Hald’s foundational contribution to modern Scandinavian design and the Orrefors tradition.
