The construction of Landshut began in 1204 under the rule of Duke Ludwig of Bavaria. It was a typical Wittelsbach founding town and marked a new form of territorial politics for the Bavarian dukes. From 1231, Landshut became the residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty and the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria until 1255. Due to the division of Bavarian lands, Landshut alternated between being a capital and a residential town. The town thrived thanks to its location on the Isar River and its strategic positioning along trade routes. By the 14th century, Landshut had developed its Gothic town center, which remained largely unchanged until the 19th century. During the period from 1392 to 1503, Landshut experienced a prosperous and politically important era under the rule of the three "rich" Dukes Heinrich, Ludwig, and Georg.
