About the Item

Vintage Royal Copenhagen porcelain vase features streamlined elongated form with fluted rim and terra cotta and grey crackle or craquelure glaze with gold band decor on the inner rim and along the bottom of the vase. The elegant, minimalist shape of the vase and reserved color palette allow the striking, graphic glaze to dominate the composition of the piece. The series of decor objects with craquelure glaze was created by Thorkild Olsen in early 20th century, and it appears to be in production until the end of 1950s. The design is well documented both in printed and in online sources. The vase is stamped on the base with Royal Copenhagen marks, as well as handwritten form and decor numbers and decorator intitials. The marks allow us to date the piece to 1955. Classic, timeless Art Deco design with strong Modernist and Chinoiserie influences will make the vase a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interior styles, from Traditional to Chinoiserie, Transitional, Mid Century Modern, Collected, Japandi, Scandinavial Modern, Hollywood Regency, Glam, or Contemporary. The unusual glaze with textured appearance and gold accents allows the vase to display beautifully with either glass or metal, and add visual interest to decor vignettes composed of ceramics; please see how the vase displays with orange A.V.E.M. Murano glass vase (listed separately) in last pictures. Thorkild Osvald Olsen (1890-1973) was a Danish painter and ceramicist known for his work with both earthenware and porcelain. Throughout his career, Olsen worked at various capacities for the Royal Porcelain Factory, where he became an important collaborator for Nils Thorsson. He was particularly skilled in over- and underglaze painting and played a crucial role in the development of glazes. In the 1920s, he created a series of works in crackle porcelain, featuring naturalistic decoration in iron red and gold with botanical motifs. Later on, he became preoccupied with stylizing his decoration, which eventually became pure abstraction based on the observation of nature, an important influence on his work. In the 1950s, he worked with soft-paste porcelain, recreating the old Chinese pourpre de chine glaze, and decorations in bleu royal glaze, using abstract ornamentation. Over his career, Olsen was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the K.A. Larssens Legat in 1925 and 1937, support from Den Reiersenske Fond in 1925, a silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1925, Laur. Andersen in 1935, Diplôme d'honneur at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1935 and in Paris in 1937, and H.H. Bruun and Højesteretssagfører C.L. David's Grant for Family and Friends in 1958. Olsen's work can be found in several prominent museums worldwide, including the Royal Copenhagen Museum, Design Museum Denmark, Museum of Modern Art in New York, Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza.
