About the Item

Pulled Feather Favrile Glass Vase Tiffany Studios Circa 1910 This monumental Favrile glass vase by Tiffany Studios exemplifies the artistry and innovation that defined Louis Comfort Tiffany’s vision for American decorative arts. This exceptional example of the firm’s celebrated “Pulled Feather” design captures the organic elegance and iridescent splendor that made Tiffany Studios a leader of the Art Nouveau movement. The vase’s gold iridescent shoulder transitions into a trilobed body decorated with flowing pulled-feather motifs in olive green and cobalt blue on a luminous gold ground. Each feather-pull evokes the natural veining of a young leaf, creating subtle movement and depth. The contrast between the opaque golden shoulder and translucent green body lends the piece a radiant, ethereal glow, while the rounded foot provides graceful balance. The trilobed form itself reflects Tiffany’s fascination with Asian art, particularly Chinese ceramics of the Qianlong period, where similar shapes were used in fruit-form vases such as pomegranates and gourds. As an avid collector of Chinese porcelain, Tiffany translated these traditional motifs into the expressive vocabulary of Art Nouveau design. Founded in New York in 1892 and renamed Tiffany Studios in 1902, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s firm revolutionized glassmaking with its patented Favrile glass process. His botanical-inspired designs, particularly the “Pulled Feather” motif, remain among the most iconic examples of Art Nouveau craftsmanship and are held in esteemed collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Corning Museum of Glass. 16" high x 5" diameter Signed and numbered "L.C.T. 5466" Literature: A similar vase is pictured in The Art Glass of Louis Comfort Tiffany by Paul E. Doros, New York, Vendome Press, 2013, p. 43.
