About the Item

A striking trio of vintage Swedish Sommerso art glass vases, handblown and signed by renowned designers Gunnar Nylund and Asta Strömberg for Strömbergshyttan. Each piece showcases a rich, luminous purple core encased in clear crystal, creating exceptional depth, clarity, and color contrast. The forms are distinctly mid-century, with subtle Space Age influences—sleek, sculptural, and refined. Displayed together or individually, these vases offer an exquisite statement of Scandinavian glass artistry. Dimensions Condition • Large vase: 26 cm (10.23") high; 8.5 cm (3.34") wide; 5 cm (1.96") deep. In very good vintage condition with light abrasion to the underside and a few micro soot specks, none distracting. Signed. • “Sputnik” slender vase: 22 cm (8.66") high; approx. 3 cm (1.18") in diameter. Minor internal discoloration, with light abrasion; overall very good condition. Signed. • Triangular vase: 18 cm (7.08") high; approx. 5 cm (1.96") in diameter. Very good condition with faint wear to the underside. Signed. A rare and beautifully coordinated set from one of Sweden’s most important glassworks. The price is for all three vases and includes free worldwide shipping. Strömberghyttan; a company which early on grasped the importance of good design when it comes to art and design glass, rendering them a leading position in mid-century modern Scandinavian design. Interior design and decoration which stood out with a distinct quality, very much due to the famous designers Gerda and Asta Strömberg. Many items with iconic design which Strömbergshyttan became famed for was often creations made by Asta Strömberg, who designed most of the glass, focusing on modern art glass and other interior design objects such as crystal vases. The company also hired the multi-talented award winning and iconic artist and designer Gunnar Nylund as well as Rune Strand. Gunnar Nylund added value to the design concepts with his bold yet sleek design. Their contribution and design skills resulted in that the company became one of the leading Scandinavian firms when it comes to innovative and ground-breaking art and design glass in the 1960s and 70s. One unusual tradition is that the name of the designer is never mentioned on the glass, only a number nevertheless is glass from this company today seen as one of the most valued company when it comes to groundbreaking art glass design making their vases and other glass objects highly valued for quality and interesting Scandinavian modern design, for the retro and vintage market. From traditional glass making to production of high-end design and art glass has a long history. Strömberghyttan glasbruk was founded in 1876, and was called the Lindfors Glasbruk  (glassworks) until its changed its name in 1933. The name changed from Lindfors to Strömbergshyttan when Edward Stromberg, who was the former head from Orrefors, Strömbergshyttan bought the company in 1933. Together with his son Eric, he devised a way to produce a glass that had a bluish-silver hue and design, which became characteristic for Strömbergshyttan. But in the late 50s they changed focus from large production lines to limited and more exclusive designs.
