About the Item

Charles Cart for Émaux des Glaciers — Large Vallauris Ceramic Vase, circa 1960s A stunning and substantial Vallauris ceramic vase by Charles Cart for Émaux des Glaciers, featuring his signature “fat lava” glaze in a vivid turquoise blue over a deep black background and interior. This striking piece was crafted at Cart’s “Le Cyclope” workshop in Annecy, France. Cart established the pottery in 1948 and registered the Le Cyclope brand in 1963. Renowned for his experimental glazing methods, Cart developed a specialized textured “fat lava” technique, in which bubbles formed in the outer glaze layer during firing, creating craters and exposing darker underlayers. The result is a dynamic, volcanic surface that evokes natural geological formations and glacial landscapes. The Émaux des Glaciers series is celebrated for its bold contrast of turquoise, blue, and black — producing a visual depth reminiscent of ice, magma, and flowing lava. Today, these pieces are highly collectible examples of mid-century French art pottery. This particular vase is a large, heavy statement piece in excellent condition, showcasing the full drama and brilliance of Cart’s technique. Dimensions: Height: 30 cm (11.8 in) Diameter: 18 cm (7.1 in) All pieces are packed with exceptional care and shipped fully insured via FedEx.
