Reference:
"Vallauris pottery" refers to the ceramic production of workshops and factories established in the Vallauris region at the end of the 19th century.
Vallauris's pottery tradition dates back to the 16th century. Not until that century did 70 families from around Genoa, including potters, repopulate the village devastated by the plague. Industrial culinary pottery and farming have always been the city's main activities.
At the beginning of the 20th century, as in other French pottery centers, culinary pottery began to decline, competing with metal containers. The economic crisis of the late 1930s and the arrival of more appropriate materials (aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel, etc.) moved pottery away from its utilitarian function to initiate, towards the end of the 1940s, a completely different evolution: ceramics artistic. This creative movement has existed since the end of the nineteenth century, with the Massier family production. Clément, Delphin, and Jérôme introduce colored enamels and metallic pigments into their ceramics.
However, in 1947, Pablo Picasso began producing remarkable ceramics, finally replacing Vallauris's reputation as a traditional pottery hub with a city where artists and craftspeople coexist.
After the Second World War, Vallauris experienced a very prosperous period. Attracted by the city's reputation, renowned artists, including Roger Capron, André Baud, Robert Picault, Gilbert Valentin, Alexandre Kostanda, and many others, settled there.
The new wave of artists creates freedom, opposes all conformism, and applies the main principles of modernism where expressionist forms and Mediterranean sensitivity mix. Two general trends emerge: interest in animal subjects and geometric decorations.
