About the Item

A beautiful earthenware vase with amazing glaze. Made by Anna-Lisa Thomson for Upsala Ekeby in Sweden, 1951-1952. Great condition - no chips, cracks or crazing. Impressed with makers mark. Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952) was one of Sweden’s most influential ceramic designers in the first half of the 20th century. Born in Gothenburg, she studied at the Technical School in Stockholm before joining Upsala Ekeby in the 1930s, where her work would come to define much of the company’s artistic identity during that decade. Thomson’s ceramics are characterized by their sculptural forms, simplified natural motifs, and innovative glazes. She had a remarkable ability to combine functionality with artistic expression, creating vases, bowls, and decorative objects that were both practical and visually striking. Her style drew inspiration from nature, folk art, and the modernist design ideals that were gaining influence in Sweden at the time. During the 1930s, Thomson became a central figure at Upsala Ekeby, helping to elevate the factory from a producer of everyday household ceramics to an internationally recognized design hub. Her work often featured earthy tones and matte glazes, as well as organic shapes that anticipated later Scandinavian modernist trends. Some of her most iconic designs include sculptural vases with relief patterns of flowers, leaves, or abstract motifs, which are now highly sought after by collectors. Thomson’s influence extended beyond individual objects; she helped shape Upsala Ekeby’s overall design philosophy, encouraging collaboration between artists and industrial production. She was instrumental in demonstrating that ceramics could be both functional and artistic—a principle that became central to the Scandinavian design movement. Despite her early death in 1952, Thomson’s work left a lasting legacy. Her pieces are celebrated today for their elegance, creativity, and pioneering spirit, and she is remembered as one of the key figures who helped define Swedish ceramic art in the 20th century. Collectors and museums continue to value her ceramics not only for their aesthetic beauty but also for their historical significance in the development of modern Swedish design.
