About the Item

A rare and beautiful hand made stoneware vase with amazing crackle glaze. Designed by Kurt Ekholm at Arabia, Finland, 1940s. Excellent condition. Stamped with makers mark: 'ARABIA'. KURT EKHOLM (born 1907 in Helsinki, died 1975 in Gothenburg) was in the 1930's and the 1940's a remarkable influential person on industrial art who tried to bring closer manufacturing and designers. He is considered to be the initiator of the modern production of Arabia factory and of his advice Art Department was established and exhibiton activity started at the factory. Ekholm graduated from Stockholm's Royal Swedish Academy of Arts as a ceramist in 1932 and a year later he became the first Art Director of Arabia. Birger Kaipiainen and Kaj Franck were employed from his suggestion and Franck became his successor after retiring in 1948. Ekholm's most famous design works for Arabia were AH dish set (1935) and AR dish set 1. Sinivalko (1936). The design and plain decoration glaze of these dish sets represented new simplicity and adaption to its purpose. Ekholm has also designed for the factory vase and pot models of which decorations were simple relief surfaces and broken green glazings. Of his suggestion the factory production began to be collected in 1942 to the museum built in the new factory building. In 1948-1975 Ekholm taught ceramics and was in charge of Gothenburg's Industrial Arts.
