No chips, cracks or crazing. Inpressed 'NITTSJÖ' and signed 'jw'. Jerk Werkmäster (1896–1978) was one of Sweden’s most significant ceramists and a central figure in 20th-century Swedish applied arts. Born on 1 October 1896 in Västgärde near Rättvik in the province of Dalarna, he grew up in a culturally rich rural environment that would leave a lasting imprint on his artistic expression. The visual traditions of Dalecarlian folk art, with their stylized forms and narrative imagery, became a lifelong source of inspiration and were later reinterpreted through a modern artistic lens in his work. Werkmäster began his formal artistic education at Mora Folk High School in 1915 before continuing his studies at the Higher School of Art and Design in Stockholm and subsequently at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied from 1919 to 1922. After completing his academic training, he received a travel scholarship that allowed him to study and work in Berlin and Munich in the early 1920s. During this period, he gained valuable experience in large-scale decorative projects and exhibition design, skills that would become central to his later career. Although he is best known today for his ceramics, Werkmäster was a highly versatile artist. In the 1920s and early 1930s he worked with painting, illustration, woodcut prints, interior decoration, and industrial design, including a period designing lamps for the Böhlmarks factory. He also played an important role in organizing and designing exhibitions in Sweden and abroad, helping to shape how Swedish art and design were presented internationally. A decisive turning point in Werkmäster’s career came in 1933 when he was appointed artistic director of Nittsjö Keramik, one of Sweden’s oldest ceramics workshops, located in Rättvik. He held this position for more than three decades, until his retirement in 1968. Under his leadership, Nittsjö underwent a major artistic renewal. Werkmäster introduced new forms, glazes, and decorative approaches that combined folk traditions with modernist simplicity and subtle influences from East Asian ceramics. His designs ranged from functional everyday objects to expressive sculptural pieces, often characterized by earthy glazes, bold contours, and a restrained yet poetic decorative language. Through exhibitions at major institutions such as Liljevalchs Art Hall in Stockholm and the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, as well as international exhibitions in cities including Paris, Brussels, Riga, and Tallinn, Werkmäster helped establish Nittsjö Keramik as a leading name in Swedish ceramics. His work attracted both critical acclaim and commercial success, ensuring the factory’s prominence during the mid-20th century. Beyond ceramics, Werkmäster completed numerous public and private commissions. He created decorative schemes for churches, public buildings, hotels, and museums, including stained glass, murals, and ceramic reliefs. His work was also represented internationally, reflecting his reputation as an artist who could bridge traditional craftsmanship and modern design ideals. Werkmäster’s ceramics are today held in many important museum collections, including the Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, and institutions abroad in London, Helsinki, and Liège. His pieces are typically signed with his initials, “JW,” and are highly regarded by collectors for their distinct combination of rustic warmth and modern clarity. He married Ellen Dagmar Vougt in 1927 and spent much of his life in Dalarna, remaining closely connected to the landscape and cultural heritage of his birthplace. Jerk Werkmäster died on 11 April 1978 in Rättvik. A year before his death, a major retrospective exhibition at Dalarnas Museum in Falun celebrated his long and influential career. Today, Jerk Werkmäster is remembered as a key figure in Swedish ceramic history, an artist who successfully united folk tradition, modern aesthetics, and masterful craftsmanship, leaving a lasting legacy in Scandinavian design.
