About the Item

Exceptional solid crystal ashtray designed by Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte in the 1940s. The piece perfectly expresses the maestro’s poetics, capable of blending architectural rigour and sculptural grace through a noble and luminous material. Crafted from a single block of hand-cut and hand-polished crystal, the ashtray features a square, highly disciplined structure in which the concave centre, carved with geometric precision, interacts with the flat surfaces and the bevelled edges. Chiesa, founder and artistic director of Fontana Arte from 1932 until his death in 1948, was one of the absolute pioneers of artistic glass and crystal craftsmanship. He conceived timeless forms able to merge the precision of the cut with the softness of light, anticipating the investigations into the relationship between transparency and volume that would mark Italian post-war design. The crystal, with its delicate aquamarine hue, retains its original luminosity and reveals, under the light, an alluring interplay of depth and reflections. In good vintage condition, with natural minor signs of age and light surface oxidations consistent with time, none of which compromise the beauty of the piece. An emblematic object of the rational and poetic elegance that made Fontana Arte an icon of Italian modernism. Fontana Arte is one of the most iconic Italian design manufacturers of the twentieth century, founded in Milan in 1932 by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana as an avant-garde workshop dedicated to experimentation in glass and light. The company immediately distinguished itself through an innovative approach combining architecture, applied arts, and industrial production. With the arrival of Pietro Chiesa, master of glass and metal, the company’s language took shape through solid crystal objects, pure forms, and highly complex hand-crafted techniques. In the 1950s, the artistic direction passed to Max Ingrand, who transformed Fontana Arte into a poetic laboratory of light, creating lamps and objects that have since become absolute icons. Over the decades, the manufacturer has maintained a reputation for excellence thanks to its mastery of glassworking, the sculptural quality of its materials, and a continuous aesthetic research that redefined the relationship between functionality and art. Today, Fontana Arte remains an international point of reference for luminous design and for the Milanese tradition of artistic glass.

Sculptural ashtray attributed to Flavio Poli for Seguso Vetri d Arte, 1970
By Albano Poli
Located in Conversano, IT
Refined sculptural ashtray attributed to Flavio Poli for Seguso Vetri d'Arte, made in Murano between the 1950s and 1960s, an impeccable example of the submerged glass technique that made the master famous. The work features a faceted body of great geometric purity, shaped from a single solid block of multi-layer glass: an internal core with intense amethyst shades emerges through a crystalline band in aquamarine tones, creating an extremely sophisticated luminous dialogue. The external surfaces, hand-ground with absolute precision, are articulated into inclined planes and diamond cuts that refract the light and transform the volume into a true optical sculpture. The hollowed interior reveals a soft cavity, perfectly smoothed, typical of Poli's poetics, in which transparency and color seem to merge into a single fluid mass. The contrast between the geometric rigor of the external faces and the roundness of the submerged core gives the work a visual balance of rare elegance, while the amethyst-aquamarine chromatic combination represents one of the most sought-after palettes of mid-century Seguso production. The object, of notable weight and crystalline quality, is an extraordinary example of Murano mastery in postwar artistic glass and constitutes an iconic piece for collectors and connoisseurs of Italian submerged glass.
