About the Item

A magnificent, fine and impressive, large antique Swedish silver quart tankard; an addition to our range of collectable silverware This magnificent and large antique Swedish silver tankard has a plain cylindrical form onto three feet, in the classic 17th century pegged tankard style. The surface of the tankard is plain and unembellished with an applied bead decorated border to the rim. This antique Swedish silver tankard retains the original hallmarked domed hinged cover encircled with an impressive chased decorated tied oak leaf festoon to the convex rounded rim. The surface of the cover is further embellished with a broad band of exceptional chased strapwork ornamentation, incorporating floral, scrolling leaf and mask designs. The upper plateau of the cover features an impressive Swedish memorial coin; the coin bears the portrait of Frederick I wearing wig, mantle and cuirass and Ulrika Eleonora wearing gala dress, and is signed 'FRIDERIC ET ULRICA EL.D.G.REX ET REG.SVEC.' This quart tankard is fitted with a S scroll handle with an impressive shield shaped terminal in addition to a large bulbous thumbpiece to the upper portion. The broad handpiece is ornamented with cast and applied strapwork decoration, incorporating a mask design to the upper portion, all on a matte background. The imposing cast silver thumbpiece is embellished with further strapwork and mask ornamentation, incorporating large scrolling leaf designs. This impressive tankard is supported by three cast and applied silver spherical feet, reflecting the same design as that of the thumbpiece. Each foot conjoins the body via a large symmetrical strapwork design, displaying the style ornamentation to the feet and thumbpiece. The interior of the tankard retains the original gilding. The hallmarks to the body and cover of this impressive tankard include: Maker's mark: MÖLLENBORG/GM (Gustaf Möllenborg) National mark: Three Crowns National mark (Swedish) Town mark: Crowned Head (Stockholm) Date mark: U6 (1898) NOTE: The name 'peg tankard' is derived from a vertical row of pegs/convex notches to the interior of the body, used to measure how much alcohol was drunk as the piece was passed around a table. This impressive example of antique silverware reflects the shape and design of a peg tankard, however bears a smooth interior. Condition This antique Swedish silver tankard is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The cast and chased decoration is all very sharp. The Swedish hallmarks struck to the underside of the tankard and sleeve of the cover are all very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this magnificent and large antique silver pegged tankard. Antique Sterling Silver Mug
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A fine and impressive small antique 17th century English sterling silver mug; an addition to our silverware collection. This fine and impressive antique William & Mary* sterling silver mug has a cylindrical tapering form. The surface of this hand raised silver mug is embellished with the impressive engraved chinoiserie decoration depicting simplified figures farming. The decoration to the body incorporates an organic bordered cartouche ornamented with the contemporary engraved initials 'SH'. The body of this sterling silver mug is further embellished with bands of tooled decoration, in addition to applied moulded decoration to the upper and lower rims. This 17th century silver mug is fitted with an impressive cast silver S scroll handle ornamented with thread decoration. Such examples from this period are rare to the market and becoming increasing difficult to locate. * This period of history saw the co-reign of King William III and Queen Mary II from 1689 until her death in 1694. Mary was the princess royal and daughter of Charles I and William III, who was also known as William of Orange, was the sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from the 1670s. NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. Due to this unfortunate event we are unable to associate a maker to this mug. Condition This 17th century silver mug is an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition. The engraved decoration is all crisp in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the mug are very clear.
