About the Item
An interesting German Jugendstil beer mug - stein - tankard - pitcher combining ornamental and figurative elements. Made ca. 1902 at Merckelbach
Wick in the heart of Westerwald, the pottery base is surrounded by ornamental Jugendstil motives strongly reminiscent to those of Patriz Huber and Josef Maria Olbrich, who were teaching and working another 100 km further to the south east in Darmstadt. The item is marked below the base with the company's stamp. Comparable works can be found in the publication by Erlebach and Schimanski, Westerwälder Steinzeug, Die neue Ära, 1900 - 1930, Jugendstil und Werkbund, page 109 ff. The pewter lid is in contrast to that stylized decor on the ceramic base. It is decorated with two lovely figurative maiden heads in the style of the art nouveau. It does not bare any further makers mark and could have been done by various firms producing art nouveau metalwork in Germany, like the WMF, Orivit, Walter Scherf's Osiris and many more.
