About the Item

A set of eight Mid-Century roly-poly glasses in the Golden Celeste pattern by Georges Briard, in a chrome gold plated carrying/display stand, first shown in their 1957 catalogue. Georges Briard created award-winning designs for items including glasses, trays, coffeepots and dishes in materials like glass, ceramics, metal, wood, and gold-plated serveware. His serveware was especially popular from the 1950s to ’70s. It was produced by companies including Culver, Pfaltzgraff and Medina Glass and sold at high-end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. Briard’s designs were found in the homes of the most fashionable hosts of the mid-century. Today, they are highly prized by collectors. The glasses are printed in a raised 24 karat gold and green checkerboard grid with images of rayed suns with faces, Laurel leaves, lyres, and other squares of geometric patterns on transparent glass. The stand is suitable for toting or display, fabulous Mid-Century era design for the bar or pool side. Glasses: 3.25 inches round and high Stand: 16.5 inches tall x 9 inches in diameter. Glasses show the Briard signature. The roly polys are in remarkable condition – without the expected gold loss often seen on these glasses. The stand shows the expected surface wear to the finish.
