About the Item

A rare, unique and monumental three foot tall silver plate cocktail shaker by (possibly attributed to) Gorham in the form of a World War I era facsimile eighteen pound shrapnel artillery shell. This shaker dates to circa 1916 - 1920. This completely silverplated shaker comes with a twelve glass shot glass rack concealed in the lower portion of the shaker. The upper portion of the shaker is where the actual shaking happens. The very top of the shaker has a small button shaped lid that is removable to allow the liquid to pour. The nose fuse / timer on top has the facsimile numerical notations and secures the strainer, it is also removable to allow for the liquids to be poured into the shaker. The shaker fits into the lower portion that holds the rack. The shaker is marked on the underside, 'fac-simile eighteen pounder shrapnel shell' and 'patent applied for in America and foreign countries'. The very bottom of the lower portion is the base and is marked the same as the top. This is the absolute perfect focal point for your bar, either at home, office or for your business. A true standout, that will tower above all else - this is the ultimate cocktail shaker. Similar, albeit smaller, shorter designs of this shaker are featured in the 'Vintage Bar Ware' book by Stephan Visakay on page 112 as well as in 'The Cocktail Shaker' book by Simon Khachadourian on pages 22, 23. A little history, the advertisement image I shared is from a Kansas City newspaper from 1916. The term shrapnel comes from, 'Lieutenant-General Henry Shrapnel (1761–1842), a British artillery officer, whose experiments, initially conducted on his own time and at his own expense, culminated in the design and development of a new type of artillery shell.' Ian Flemming's character James Bond preferred his martinis 'shaken, not stirred'. The catchphrase first appears in the novel Diamonds Are Forever (1956), though Bond himself does not actually say it until Dr. No (1958), where his exact words are "shaken and not stirred."
