About the Item

Here is a very attractive brass tray that barely comes to market by the 20th century great, Tommi Parzinger. This tray was designed around 1960 for Dorlyn Silversmiths, which was located on Lafayette Street In Manhattan. The tray is in good condition and it retains its original patina. (Dorlyn pieces were lacquered to prevent tarnishing and this piece retains its original lacquer.) There are some darker areas where the lacquer has worn and there are light scratches and light wear as shown in the photos. The bottom of the tray has the most tarnish and scratches. That said, this tray could be polished to a bright, even brass finish if desired. However, the tray displays beautifully and would add a touch of warmth and glamor to any room in the house. About Tommi Parzinger: Parzinger was born the son of Hans Parzinger, a sculptor, in 1903. He grew up in Munich and studied at the School of Arts and Crafts under Richard Riemerschmid . In 1924 he joined the Die 6, a group of graphic designers and artists who created exquisite posters in the modernist style. Later, he worked for the German Vereinigte Werkstätten in Munich and for the Wiener Werkstätte , where he designed furniture, posters, as well as glass, ceramic and metal objects. He also worked as a designer for the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin (KPM) and for the ceramic workshop of the Schleiß family (Schleiss-Keramik) in Gmunden , where he designed and manufactured a wide variety of ceramic items and also tiled stoves. In 1932 he travelled to the United States for the first time, where he won first prize in a poster competition for the North German Lloyd. In 1935 he emigrated permanently to New York, where he became a celebrated designer and artist. Initially, he designed brass, crystal objects and furniture for Rena Rosenthal's boutique on Madison Avenue. In 1939 he opened his own studio, Parzinger Inc. and in the early 1940's, he began designing a collection of modern furniture for Boston-based Charak Furniture Company. In the late 1940's, he founded Parzinger Originals and opened on Madison Avenue. Parzinger Originals continued until his death in 1981. Although Parzinger is best known today for exquisite furniture designs, he worked in all mediums, including silver, ceramic, metal and fabric. In the 1960s and 1970s, his focus turned to mostly painting in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s
