About the Item
This whimsical vintage shot glass was designed and manufactured in Taxco, Guerrero by Los Castillo, one of the most influential workshops in 20th-century Mexican silversmithing. Crafted in silver-plate with a subtly hand-hammered surface, the piece is distinguished by a sculptural dragonfly-form handle, richly inlaid with lapis lazuli and malachite.
The dragonfly—rendered with elongated wings and vibrant stone inlay—serves both as a functional handle and as a playful sculptural element, transforming the shot glass into a miniature work of art. A raised band of stone inlay encircles the waist of the vessel, visually connecting the body to the handle and enhancing the dynamic, organic composition.
The hourglass silhouette, combined with the contrast between the softly textured silver-plate and the saturated blue and green stones, exemplifies Los Castillo’s celebrated approach: elevating everyday objects through imaginative form, refined craftsmanship, and expressive use of mixed materials. The interior retains a warm gilt tone, offering a subtle and elegant contrast to the exterior finish.
The piece bears its original manufacturer’s hallmark, stamped to the underside and reading:
“Los Castillo · Taxco · Plateado · TA-01”, confirming its authenticity and origin within the Taxco silver tradition.
Founded by Antonio Castillo and continued by successive generations, Los Castillo played a pivotal role in redefining modern Mexican silver, pioneering sculptural forms, whimsical motifs, and innovative stone inlay techniques. Their work remains highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
A rare and charming example of Taxco modern silver barware, ideal for collectors of Mexican design, sculptural objects, or distinctive conversation pieces.
