About the Item
Vintage set of handblown decanter carafe with stopper and 6 footed glasses are made of blue opaque pulegoso art glass. The glass is made up of thousands of tiny air bubbles that give it a frothy effect, known as the pulegoso technique. Minimal forms of the pieces allow the raw beauty of the textured glass to take center stage.
Pulegoso glass was created by Napoleone Martinuzzi for Venini in late 1920s as an entirely new to Murano tradition type of glass, with textured, air-bubble filled mass, and properties similar to ceramic. The new pulegoso vases were considered strikingly modern, becoming very fashionable and influencing the development of art glass in Murano. Carlo Scarpa, who became Venini's most important designed in 1930s-1940s, involved pulegoso glass in his designs, bringing clarity and coherence to the designs and further exploring the possible uses of thick, solid glass, including transporting new achievements, forms, and styles in European glass of 1920s and 1930s to the Murano milieu, creating series of objects in sommerso technique with individual application of layers of bubble-glass flecked with gold leaf as reinterpretation of classic Venetian techniques with the new material, and eventually developing it into bollicine glass. After the success of the pulegoso glass other Murano artists and glass studios, such as A.V.E.M., Zeccin Martinuzzi, and Seguso, followed up with their own interpretations of the new material.
The set is not marked, making it hard to positively attribute it to an artist or a studio, especially as it appears to be rather rare; we were unable to find another example of this design in either printed on online catalogues or auctions. Stylistically the set is very similar to Scarpa pieces, created for Venini in 1930s. Sculptural, decorative set with elegant form and statement piece presence will make a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes, barware settings, and various interior styles, from Traditional to Victorian, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Grand Millennial, Collected, or Contemporary.

Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
