About the Item

A very fine pair of George III Neo Classical Wine Coasters made in London in 1773 by Robert Hennell The Wine Coasters are circular in form with a spreading base, which is decorated with beading. The rim is decorated with gadrooning and the sides are pierced with vertical arched pails. The sides are also decorated with applied Neo Classical cast floral medallions as well as raised bluebell garlands. The front displays an oval disc cartouche engraved with contemporary script initials. The Coasters are of a very good gauge of silver and have their original turned fruitwood bases. These examples are very well marked and in excellent condition. The Coasters were produced when Robert Hennell was making a limited number of items in the High Neo Classical style, almost certainly from designs directly from the celebrated 18th century designer, Robert Adam. Some of the most famous Hennell output from this period is contained within the Holkham Hall Service. Additional information: Height: 1.6 inches, 4cm. Diameter at the rim: 5 inches, 12.5 cm
