About the Item
A stylish jugendstil German Reinhold Merkelbach pewter mounted ceramic jug by Paul Wynard (1879-1956) and dating from around 1905. The large stoneware jug stands on a narrow flat round unglazed base and is of round bulbous form with a narrow short funnel neck with a shaped pouring spout. A large flat looped ribbed pouring handle is applied to the side of the jug. The jug is mounted with a traditional quality pewter hinged domed cover with a raised thumb rest and is attached to the pouring handle. The body of the jug is decorated with a scroll and stylized floret raised decoration around the body and set within a raised stipple border. Further stylized raised florets are scattered evenly around the upper and lower body of the jug. The jug has a brown salt glazed finish, and the base has impressed H MERKELBACH GRENZHAUSEN marks along with number 3025 with other marks.
Provenance: Acquired from a private collection in the UK Art Market
In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
