About the Item
A wonderful silver plate and gilt novelty decanter or ewer in the form of an owl with wonderfully described silver plated mounts, a lush ruby red glass body, and intense amber eyes.
Made in Spain c. 1950, this model was commercialised by Cartier worldwide, and as a result it is a highly sought-after design. Similar examples command strong prices whenever they appear at Sotheby’s and Christie's.
The body of the carafe is a deep ruby red hand blown glass with delightful details – notice how the wings are suggested by sweeping lines on the flanks of the owl. The glass is in wonderful condition. The owl stands well and the hinge on the head is good.
The mounts are beautifully modelled with fine detailing to the owl’s feathers around the head and collar, as well as excellent definition on the feet. The face retains the gilding around the eyes, giving the owl a very bright look. He also retains his original, intense amber eyes.
The mounts are silver plated and are in superb condition. They are marked on the head both on the collar to the front and back, as well as to the underside of the feet.
It is an outstanding find, highly decorative and in great condition – a real conversation piece.
