About the Item
Striking German Art Deco Hip Flask with Textured Design, circa 1920s
This handsome Art Deco hip flask, dating from the 1920s, is a fine example of German design and craftsmanship from the interwar period. Measuring 7 inches tall, it features an elegant engine-turned texture on both sides with vertical striping that catches the light beautifully. A blank rectangular cartouche, never engraved, remains ready for a new owner’s initials, making this both a personal and historical gift.
The flask is fitted with a hinged screw cap and arm that function smoothly, a detail characteristic of higher-quality German manufacture. Evidence of prior use is visible, gentle wear, surface marks, and even a subtle tactile impression from being grasped tightly over the years, yet there are no significant condition issues to note. This history only adds to the flask’s character, reminding us that it was once carried and used as a daily companion.
The streamlined vertical decoration and geometric precision place this firmly in the Art Deco aesthetic, a movement that celebrated modernity, luxury, and machine-age elegance. In Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, workshops in Pforzheim, Solingen, and Geislingen were producing stylish flasks, cigarette cases, and other accessories that embodied both practicality and design innovation. These objects reflected a society fascinated by progress, new materials, and modern lifestyles.
Today, German Art Deco flasks are highly collectible, valued for their timeless aesthetic, quality of workmanship, and historical resonance. This piece is especially appealing because of its untouched monogram plate, impressive size, and evocative signs of authentic use. It would make a distinguished gift, a decorative accent for a bar or study, or a cherished addition to any collection of Art Deco or early 20th-century design.

1933 Art Deco Marathon Combination Lighter & Cigarette Case by F. A. Whittaker
A rare and collectible example of 1930s novelty smoking accessories, this Marathon combination lighter and cigarette case showcases the elegance and innovation of Art Deco design. Crafted in 1933 by noted designer F. A. Whittaker, the case features a stunning airbrushed geometric pattern in alternating tan/black and grey/black abstract motifs, with a central cartouche that remains unengraved. The reverse is finished in a sophisticated grey and black design, emphasizing the clean, streamlined aesthetic typical of the era.
The interior reveals meticulous attention to detail, including a wheel-turned chrome finish, two hinged cigarette holders for added functionality, and a built-in lighter stamped with US Patent No. 1921855 and marked “Marathon, Trade Mark, Pat Applied For.” Lighter fuel can easily be added via the side compartment near the hinge, and the interior remains exceptionally clean and free of issues.
This piece shows gentle, expected wear, including minor enamel losses and an indentation at the lower left corner of the case, reflecting its authentic vintage character. Despite these imperfections, it remains a fully functional and highly desirable collector’s item.
Marathon cigarette cases were celebrated in the early 20th century for their combination of practicality and artistry, and F. A. Whittaker was a prominent designer whose work elevated everyday smoking accessories into objects of sophistication. Collectors prize these cases for their mechanical ingenuity, stylish Art Deco design, and historical significance, making them a standout addition to any collection of vintage lighters...
