About the Item
A vintage cut crystal decanter in the Ship Captains shape, with a top round stopper, circa early 1980s.
The term “captains decanter” refers to the historical “ship’s decanter” used on naval vessels, which gained its modern shape in the 18th century for stability at sea.
A Ship’s Decanter has a wide, heavy base designed to keep it stable on a rocking ship.
It may also be called a “Rodney” decanter after the British Admiral Rodney used one in a victory celebration during the American Revolution.
A bulbous bottom with a slender long stem neck.
Beautifully cut with both a geometric pattern and oval “thumbprints” and a star-cut bottom.
The stopper is circular in shape, ground at the stem for a tight fit.
5 in. Diameter x 10in. H including the stopper.
