About the Item

The Art of Naturalism: Rare 19th-Century Jacob Petit Porcelain Cabbage Tureen Stand Circa: 1830–1860 Origin: Paris/Fontainebleau, France Maker: Jacob Petit (1796–1868) This exceptional three-piece porcelain tureen is a masterwork of French Rococo Revival ceramics by the celebrated manufactory of Jacob Petit. Modeled naturalistically as a vibrant head of Savoy cabbage, this piece exemplifies the 19th-century fascination with trompe l'œil dining wares, designed to delight guests by disguising serving vessels as the food itself. Composed of three distinct elements—a deep bowl, fitted cover, and leafy underplate—this piece is molded in high relief with crisp, organic realism to mimic the crinkled texture of Savoy cabbage, featuring dynamically curling leaves that serve as integrated handles and a brilliant, high-gloss glaze ranging from deep emerald to milky white that enhances the illusion of a freshly harvested vegetable. Marks: In underglaze blue a "JP" and a crossed swords to the edge of the foot rim. Condition: Good with a tiny frit- on exterior under edge of tureen-see last photo. The Jacob Petit Manufactory Jacob Petit was one of the most influential and eccentric figures in 19th-century French porcelain. After purchasing a porcelain factory in Fontainebleau in 1830, he became famous for rejecting the rigid Neoclassical styles of the Napoleonic era in favor of the whimsical, colorful, and ornate. Petit’s work often drew inspiration from the 18th-century Rococo period, bringing a renewed vibrancy to French decorative arts. His factory was known for technical innovation and bold shapes, catering to the "nouveau riche" of the mid-19th century who desired conversation pieces for their dining tables. Reference: National Ceramic Museum at Sèvres (Musée national de Céramique, Sèvres, France). A nearly identical cabbage tureen is part of their permanent collection. (Ref: NY10947-nmrr)
