About the Item

This Austrian Biedermeier compote from the mid-19th century features a circular wooden bowl over an exquisite stand made of three elegant columns with ebonized wood capitals and bases over a two tiered round base. The simple choice of wood for a compote is balanced by the classical choice of a column pedestal, reminiscent of the antiquity, particularly prized during the Empire era, from which the Biedermeier period inherits. The bowl is 10 inches wide and the base is 8.25 inches wide. The Stand is probably older than the bowl itself. This Austrian compote, circa 1840 would be a wonderful centerpiece to any table.
