About the Item
Brilliantly glazed in vivid shades of cerulean, lilac, rich yellow and purple, this punsch bowl decorated with Bacchus figures, grapes and pitchers of wine was designed and executed by Carl-Harry Stalhane, one of the wunderkinds of 1940s Swedish design. Created, astonishingly, when Stalhane was only 23 years old, the artist was becoming one of the mainstays of the venerable Rorstrand porcelain works in Sweden, and he stayed at the firm for over 30 years. The bowl was designed to celebrate and hold the famous Swedish "punsch," which consisted of wine or rum, fruit juices and other ingredients, and served to warm those who consumed it on even the coldest of winter nights. The bowl is signed and dated on the bottom.
