About the Item
A striking silver-plated serving bowl with volcanic rock base, designed and handcrafted in Taxco, Mexico in the mid-1980s by celebrated designer Emilia Castillo. This sculptural mixed-media piece showcases Castillo’s signature fusion of Mexican silversmithing traditions, organic materials, and artistic inlay work.
The hammered silver bowl features crushed malachite and jasper stone inlays arranged in whimsical floral motifs around the rim—an iconic hallmark of Castillo’s nature-inspired aesthetic. The interior is richly hand-hammered, reflecting warm golden tones, while the detachable volcanic rock base adds sculptural weight and a dramatic textural contrast.
Included is the original matching silver-plated serving spoon, also handmade and retaining its hallmark.
Both pieces are stamped:
Emilia Castillo · Mexico · M.R. · TO-85 · Plateado
A beautiful example of Mexican modernist design, this piece is ideal for collectors, interior designers, and anyone drawn to refined artisanal work from Taxco’s legendary silversmithing lineage—Emilia Castillo being the daughter of Antonio Castillo of the famed Los Castillo workshop.

Emilia Castillo Sterling Silver & Volcanic Stone Molcajete with Spoon, Mexico, Later 20th Century
A sterling silver and volcanic stone molcajete (mortar) set is a functional sculptural object that bridges traditional craftsmanship and modern luxury. The handmade serving piece is modeled after the ancient Mesoamerican molcajete, traditionally used for grinding spices and preparing salsa or guacamole. Castillo’s refined interpretation elevates the form with a hammered sterling silver bowl adorned with bold silver orbs encircling the rim, paired with a substantial curved-handled sterling silver spoon. The inner bowl rests within a hand-carved, tripod-footed volcanic stone base, offering both contrast and stability.
This sculptural piece draws inspiration from the traditional Mexican molcajete...
