Japanese centerpiece bowl, ca 1890. Curved and tapering sides with scalloped mouth rim; plain and short spread foot. Applied iris flowers in relief with loose and distended petals and crisscrossing tendrils and stems in eddying water; gorgeous period motif on spot-hammered ground. Double-walled. Meiji-era Art Nouveau centerpiece for the cosmopolitan West. Marked. Weight: 83 troy ounces.
