About Jean Després (1889–1980)
Jean Després was one of the most important French Art Deco silversmiths and modernist designers of the 20th century. Born in 1889 in Souvigny and raised in Avallon, he trained as a goldsmith in Paris and immersed himself in the artistic avant-garde, meeting figures such as Picasso, Modigliani, De Chirico, Laurencin, Utrillo, and especially Georges Braque, who became a close friend. Strongly influenced by Cubism and by his technical experience working in aviation workshops during World War I, Després developed a distinctive aesthetic based on pure geometric forms, industrial inspiration, and his signature hammered surfaces.
In the 1920s and 1930s, he became a leading figure of the French Art Deco movement, creating jewelry, tableware, hollowware, and decorative objects in silver, tin, and silver-plated metal. His “motor jewelry” and sculptural metalwork departed from traditional precious-stone luxury, placing craftsmanship and form at the center of design. His pieces were exhibited at major salons and international exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, and the 1937 World’s Fair (where he received multiple awards).
Celebrated in France and abroad, Després counted among his clients artists, intellectuals, and notable personalities—including Josephine Baker. Today, his work is highly sought after by collectors of Art Deco metalwork, French modernist design, and 20th-century decorative arts.
