About the Item

Mid-20th Century British Studio Pottery Bowl by Maria Seviers This striking mid-century studio pottery bowl is a fine example of British craftsmanship from the renowned Seviers Pottery in Hampstead, London. Hand-thrown by Maria Seviers (active 1948-1966), who trained at the Camberwell and Central Schools of Art, this piece dates to the post-1951 period when her studio operated independently as Seviers Pottery Ltd. Seviers' work often drew inspiration from Chinese ceramics, evident in the rich, layered glazes and organic forms that characterize her output. The bowl features a shallow, wide-mouthed design with gently sloping sides, measuring approximately 10 inches in diameter. Its exterior boasts a glossy solid black glaze, while the interior showcases an abstract dendritic pattern—branching, vein-like formations in lighter grayish-white tones against a deep black ground with subtle blue gradients near the rim. This crystalline effect was achieved through specialized high-temperature glazing techniques, resulting in a unique, one-of-a-kind texture that resembles natural mineral growth or crackled ice. The unglazed base reveals the natural beige clay body with visible potter's wheel throwing rings, signed in blue script as "Seviers" for authenticity. In excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs—only minor natural variations in the glaze that enhance its artisanal charm. Perfect as a decorative centerpiece, fruit bowl, or collector's item for enthusiasts of mid-century modern pottery.
