About the Item
A very fine pair of early George III Sauceboats made in London in 1763 by William Cripps.
The Sauceboats are of a substantial size and stand on three ribbed legs with shell feet and shell mouldings where they are attached to the main body. The main body has a very attractive baluster form with a gadrooned rim. The scroll handle is also decoarted with ribbing and displays a quatrefoil motif where it is attached to the main body. The side of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a foliate spray and shell cartouche. The sauceboats are in excellent condition and are very well marked on the underside, as well as being engraved with their original scratch weight. William Cripps was apprentice to David Willaume and was to become an accomplished craftsman and a versatile exponent of the Rococo style. To judge from his surviving pieces he enjoyed a considerable clientele.
