About the Item

Set of 4 English Georgian sterling silver covered entrée dishes, 1804. Retailed by Rundell, Bridge Rundell in London. Each: Chamfered and rectangular bowl; tapering sides and reeded rim interspersed with grape bunches and leaves. Cover raised and faceted with gadrooned shoulder; faceted bracket handle mounted to rope-bordered oval. Engraved royal arms with the mottos “Dieu et mon droit” (“God and my right”) and “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (“Shame on anyone who thinks evil of it”). Evil of what? Lively table talk guaranteed. Regency opulence with a Hanoverian connection. Rundell, Bridge Rundell were appointed Royal Goldsmiths Jewelers by George III in 1797, a title they held until the firm was dissolved early in the reign of George III’s granddaughter, Queen Victoria. They were makers and purveyors of sumptuous wares to the royal household of which these four dishes. Fully marked including maker’s stamp (Digby Scott Benjamin Smith) and retailer’s stamps, including phrase “Rundell Bridge Rundell Aurifices Regis Londini Fecerunt”. Heavy total weight: 279 troy ounces.
